Sliding glass doors or patio doors allows easy access to a patio or veranda. They are different from traditional doors that swing open. This type of patio door utilizes a system of tracks and rollers that move easily from a closed to an open position. Over a period of time there is a need to make repairs to the door. If your door doesn’t require a repair then the mechanism that allows the door to move easily requires a overhauling.

Glass doors can be heavy or bulky so it is always a good idea to take help of a friend or another family member. As these types of doors are generally not able to open and close easily therefore there is a need to disengage the door from the frame.

Then do an inspection of the structure of your door. You may see that it is possible to lift the sliding door out of the track. You may need to detach the sliding door completely. In order to do this, stand on the inside of the door structure. Grip each end of the door firmly and lift upward. This must lift the door panel off and out of the bottom track. Swing the panel bottom slightly toward the inside of the room. This should disengage the rollers along the top track. This is how the sliding door can be detached.

The other glass door configurations may require removing a side rail from each track for the purpose of lifting the patio door out. Generally, you can see these detachable rails on the inside, along the top and bottom. A screwdriver may be used to remove the rails and set them aside.

Usually the sliding glass door repair focuses on two specific areas: the rollers or the tracks. To determine whether the rollers are creating problem a detached sliding door can be placed on the pair of sawhorses which allows you to examine the rollers found along the top and the bottom of the door easily. If you have found the rollers damaged or warped in any way a screwdriver may be used to free the damaged rollers from the framing of the door.

The detached roller must be taken to the hardware this allows you to make a precise match. You will save a lot of time taking this simple precaution. The new rollers must be attached to the door framing.

The tracks must also be inspected before placing the door back into position. Generally the tracks require a good cleaning. A vacuum cleaner can be used to remove any loose dirt. After removing the dirt the rails must be washed with mild detergent and warm water. Once you have ensured that the tracks are clean and clear the door can be reinstalled.
